Gloom is a dual-type Grass/Poison Pokémon introduced in Generation I. It evolves from Oddish at level 21 and can further evolve into either Vileplume when exposed to a Leaf Stone or Bellossom when exposed to a Sun Stone. Gloom is known for its incredibly foul odor, which it releases from the pistil of its flower. This stench is so potent that it can cause fainting at a distance of 1.25 miles. Interestingly, around one out of a thousand people actually enjoy sniffing its nose-bending stink.

Gloom's appearance is characterized by a blue, bipedal body with rudimentary hands and feet. On its head is a flower with spherical petals surrounded by four reddish-brown leaves. The petals are dark reddish-brown with white spots, and the pattern differs between males and females. From its mouth, Gloom drips a sticky nectar that has the appearance and consistency of drool. This nectar, despite its horrible smell, can be used as a fertilizer for plants.

Pokédex Entries Across Versions

  • Red/Blue: The fluid that oozes from its mouth isn't drool. It is a nectar that is used to attract prey.
  • Yellow: The honey it drools from its mouth smells so atrocious, it can curl noses more than a mile away.
  • Gold/Silver: The smell from its drool-like syrup and the pollen on its petals is so bad, it may make opponents faint.
  • Ruby/Sapphire: From its mouth Gloom drips honey that smells absolutely horrible. Apparently, it loves the horrid stench. It sniffs the noxious fumes and then drools even more of its honey.

Evolutions

Oddish (Level 21) → Gloom → Vileplume (Leaf Stone) or Bellossom (Sun Stone)

Habits

Gloom tends to live in grassy plains. When it feels threatened, the odor it emits worsens, but it will not release its stench if it feels safe. The odor serves as both a defense mechanism and a way to attract prey.

Additions Across Generations

In Generation II, Gloom gained the ability to evolve into Bellossom using a Sun Stone, giving it a branched evolution. Its hidden ability, Stench, was introduced in later generations, giving it a 10% chance of making the target flinch with each hit. In Generation VI, Gloom became capable of using the move Grassy Terrain, which creates a grassy field that heals Pokémon on the ground and strengthens Grass-type moves.
