Gengar is a Ghost/Poison-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I. It is the final evolution of Gastly, evolving from Haunter when traded. Gengar is known for its mischievous nature and ability to hide in shadows. It is said to emerge from darkness to steal the lives of those who become lost in mountains. Gengar's body acts as a heat sink, cooling the surrounding area by nearly 10°F (5°C). In the anime, Gengar can fly, possess people and other Pokémon, create illusions, and extend its tongue by several meters.
Gengar has received mostly positive responses since its debut, primarily for its design, which has been noted for its popularity and iconicity. It has frequently ranked highly in popularity polls for the series. Gengar was one of the earliest designs conceived for Pokémon Red and Blue, and was described by Pokémon artist Ken Sugimori as one of his favorites. In Generation VI, Gengar gained a Mega Evolution form, and in Generation VIII, it received a Gigantamax form.
