Tentacruel is a large, jellyfish-like Pokémon with a primarily light blue body that helps it camouflage in water. It has two large red orbs on its head that glow when it is excited or agitated, allowing it to communicate with others of its kind and alert them to danger. Tentacruel possesses 80 tentacles in total, though most are kept hidden and short, with only up to 14 typically visible. These tentacles can extend and contract freely, allowing Tentacruel to ensnare prey in a net-like formation before immobilizing it with poison. The tentacles are highly venomous and can cause sharp, stabbing pain upon contact.
Tentacruel's red orbs are capable of refracting sunlight, storing energy, and firing ultrasonic waves. When gathered in large groups, Tentacruel can scare away nearby fish Pokémon. As it ages, Tentacruel tends to lose some of its tentacles. It lives in underwater rock formations and can be found throughout the ocean. Interestingly, while Tentacruel bears a strong resemblance to Toedscruel, the two are separate and biologically unrelated species.

Tentacruel is known to live in complex rock formations on the ocean floor, where it traps prey using its numerous tentacles. It can catch up to 80 prey simultaneously. When hunting, Tentacruel extends its normally short tentacles to ensnare and immobilize its targets.

In Generation 1, Tentacruel had a base Special stat of 120. Its base experience yield was changed from 205 to 180 in Generation 5. The Pokémon's base Friendship value was 70 in Generations 2-7. In Generation 9, a similar-looking Pokémon called Toedscruel was introduced, though it is a separate species from Tentacruel.
