About the name Madison
Madison started as an English surname meaning "son of Maud" or "son of Matthew". It became a girls' name almost by accident after the 1984 film Splash, in which a mermaid names herself after Madison Avenue in New York. Within twenty years it had become one of the most popular girls' names in the United States.
