Butterfree is a dual-type Bug/Flying Pokémon introduced in Generation I. It evolves from Metapod starting at level 10 and is the final form of Caterpie. Known for its beautiful wings and gentle nature, Butterfree has captured the hearts of many trainers. Its large compound eyes are composed of numerous tiny eyes, giving it excellent vision. Butterfree's wings are covered with toxic scales that can paralyze, poison, or induce sleep in its opponents. These scales also repel water, allowing Butterfree to fly even in rain. It has a superior ability to search for delicious honey from flowers, capable of detecting nectar up to six miles away from its nest. Butterfree can use its sensitive antennae to detect the odors of blooming flowers in search of nectar, which it carries with the hairs of its legs.

Butterfree can breed with other Pokémon in the Bug egg group. It takes 3,840 to 4,096 steps to hatch a Caterpie egg.

Habits
Butterfree loves the nectar of flowers and can locate flower patches that have even tiny amounts of pollen. It sometimes has territorial disputes with Cutiefly over fields of flowers. Butterfree is known to defend Caterpie from bird Pokémon using its poisonous scales.
Additions Across Generations
In Generation VIII, Butterfree gained the ability to Gigantamax, becoming Gigantamax Butterfree. This form has bright green wings and can scatter scales that cause paralysis, poisoning, or sleep. Gigantamax Butterfree is capable of using the exclusive G-Max Move G-Max Befuddle.
