Blastoise is a large, bipedal turtle Pokémon with a blue body and a tough, brown shell. It has two powerful water cannons protruding from its shell, which can be extended or withdrawn. These cannons are capable of producing water blasts that can pierce steel and concrete, with a blast range of over 6 miles (10 kilometers). Blastoise's shell has a cream-colored underside and a white ridge encircling its arms. It has a stubby tail, triangular ears, small brown eyes, and a cream-colored lower jaw.

In battle, Blastoise makes itself heavy to withstand powerful blasts and crush opponents. It can take on a leadership role among groups of Squirtle and Wartortle. Blastoise prefers freshwater habitats like ponds and lakes. When feeling completely secure, it may sleep with its belly exposed, though this is rare.

Blastoise has two special forms: Mega Blastoise and Gigantamax Blastoise. Mega Blastoise develops additional cannons on its arms and a larger central cannon, while Gigantamax Blastoise's shell transforms into a battleship-like formation with 31 cannons of various sizes.
