Goldeen is a Water-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I. This elegant fish Pokémon resembles a goldfish with a horn on its forehead, which is larger in males than in females. Goldeen is known for its beautiful, billowing tail fin that resembles an elegant ballroom dress, earning it the nickname "Water Queen" or "Water Dancer". It has a wild temperament and will use its horn to smash its way to freedom if kept in an aquarium.

Goldeen is a powerful swimmer, capable of maintaining a steady speed of five knots while swimming upstream. During breeding season in spring, large schools of Goldeen can be seen swimming upstream in rivers and waterfalls. It competes with others of its kind to determine which has the strongest, thickest horn. Humans swimming near Goldeen must exercise caution, as it may ram them with its sharp horn.

Interestingly, Goldeen and its evolution were the only Pokémon that could learn Waterfall in Generation I, before the move became an HM. In the Pokémon Red and Blue beta, Goldeen was originally known as "Goldy". Its name is likely a combination of "goldfish" or "golden" and "queen".
