Mareep is an Electric-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II. It is known as the Wool Pokémon and is characterized by its fluffy cream-colored wool covering its entire body. Mareep has a blue head with black eyes and conical ears with a yellow-and-black striped pattern. Its four feet are blue with two digits each, and it appears to be on tiptoe at all times. The most distinctive feature of Mareep is the orange sphere at the end of its tail, which acts like a small light bulb and glows brighter as it stores more electricity.

Mareep's wool is a unique adaptation that continuously grows and stores electricity. As static electricity builds up in its body, the wool can double in volume. Touching the charged wool results in a static shock. Interestingly, during summer, Mareep sheds its fleece, but it grows back completely within a week. The air stored in its fur allows Mareep to regulate its body temperature, staying cool in summer and warm in winter.

Pokédex Entries Across Versions

  • Gold: If static electricity builds in its body, its fleece doubles in volume. Touching it will shock you.
  • Silver: Its fleece grows continually. In the summer, the fleece is fully shed, but it grows back in a week.
  • Crystal: It stores lots of air in its soft fur, allowing it to stay cool in summer and warm in winter.
  • Ultra Sun: Clothing made from Mareep's fleece is easily charged with static electricity, so a special process is used on it.
  • Ultra Moon: Rubbing its fleece generates electricity. You'll want to pet it because it's cute, but if you use your bare hand, you'll get a painful shock.

Evolutions

Mareep evolves into Flaaffy at level 15, which then evolves into Ampharos at level 30.

Habits and Additions Across Generations

Mareep tends to avoid battles in the wild and has a mild disposition. It is most often found in grassy fields but can also be found on farms where its wool is used to make high-quality clothing. In Pokémon Sleep, it was revealed that Mareep is known to roll over in its sleep. The Pokémon's design has remained largely consistent across generations, with its signature electric-storing wool being a key feature throughout its appearances in the games.
