Onix is a massive Rock/Ground-type Pokémon resembling a chain of gray boulders that become smaller towards the tail. It is known for its impressive length, making it the tallest Rock-type Pokémon. Onix possesses a unique internal compass in its brain, which prevents it from losing direction while tunneling underground. This serpentine Pokémon can burrow through the earth at remarkable speeds, reaching up to 50 miles (80 kilometers) per hour. As Onix grows older, its body becomes increasingly rounded and smoother, eventually resembling black diamonds.

The tunnels created by Onix serve as homes for other Pokémon, such as Diglett. Interestingly, Onix can absorb hard objects it encounters while tunneling, incorporating them into its body and making it even sturdier. In battle, Onix has demonstrated the ability to rotate its head or any part of its body in a full 360-degree motion. According to Pokémon Sleep, Onix is known to occasionally fall asleep while in the middle of digging tunnels, and is believed to be a deep sleeper due to the protection offered by its sturdy body.
