Steelix is a Steel/Ground-type Pokémon introduced in Generation 2. It is the evolved form of Onix when traded while holding a Metal Coat. Steelix is known as the Iron Snake Pokémon and is renowned for its incredible durability and strength. Its body is made up of rock-like sections coated with steel powder, making it harder than diamonds and able to withstand extreme temperatures. Steelix can burrow deep underground, with records showing it reaching depths of over six-tenths of a mile towards the earth's core.

This Pokémon's evolution is said to be the result of an Onix's composition becoming more diamond-like after living for about 100 years. Steelix's eyes are adapted to see in the darkness underground, and it can easily chew through boulders with its powerful jaws. Interestingly, Steelix is known to sleep in an upright position, maintaining superb balance without toppling over.

Habits and Additions Across Generations

Steelix has gained additional forms and abilities across generations. In Generation 6, Steelix received a Mega Evolution form, Mega Steelix, which further increases its defensive capabilities. The Mega Evolution causes the metallic scraps around its neck to react to its movements and change position when attacking. In Generation 8, Steelix gained the ability to Dynamax, allowing it to grow to enormous sizes in battle.
