Ivysaur is the evolved form of Bulbasaur, maintaining its Grass/Poison dual-type. This quadrupedal Pokémon has blue-green skin with darker patches and a large pink bud on its back, supported by a short brown trunk surrounded by leafy green fronds. As Ivysaur grows, the weight of the plant prevents it from running fast and standing on its hind legs, forcing its legs to grow sturdier. When the flower is ready to bloom, it gives off a distinct, sweet-smelling aroma and starts swelling. Ivysaur spends more time in sunlight as it prepares for evolution, which adds to the strength of both the Pokémon and its plant. Interestingly, Ivysaur has never been seen losing a battle on screen in any animated media.

Pokédex Entries Across Versions

  • Red/Blue: When the bulb on its back grows large, it appears to lose the ability to stand on its hind legs.

  • Gold/Silver: Exposure to sunlight adds to its strength. Sunlight also makes the bud on its back grow larger.

Evolutions

Ivysaur evolves from Bulbasaur at level 16 and evolves into Venusaur at level 32. It's worth noting that Ivysaur is the only second stage Generation 1 starter Pokémon that evolves at level 32, while both Charmeleon and Wartortle evolve at level 36.

Habits

Ivysaur's natural habitat is plains, which is unusual considering it's a grass Pokémon with a large growing plant on its back. When the flower on an Ivysaur's back is ready to bloom, it means the Ivysaur will soon evolve into a Venusaur. At this stage, the Ivysaur will start to spend more time in the sunlight to gain strength for its upcoming evolution.

Additions Across Generations

In Generation 1, Ivysaur had a base Special stat of 80. From Generations 2-7, Ivysaur's base Friendship value was 70. Ivysaur is the only second stage Grass/Poison type Pokémon that doesn't need an evolutionary Stone to reach its final form. In the Super Smash Bros. series, Ivysaur is the only Pokémon used by Pokémon Trainer that does not know an HM move.
