Larvitar is a small, green reptilian Pokémon with rocky skin introduced in Generation II. It has a blunt spike on top of its head, a short, rounded snout, and triangular, black markings below and on the upper corners of its red eyes. Red scales cover its diamond-shaped belly, and there are several small holes in its body. Its short arms lack fingers, while its feet have a single toenail each. Larvitar's tail resembles a tunnel-boring machine, with a conical center surrounded by a ring of plate-like scales.

Born deep underground, Larvitar must eat its way through the soil to reach the surface and see its parents' faces. It grows by consuming soil and will enter its pupal stage upon eating an entire mountain's worth of earth. Larvitar usually lives in mountains, hills, and caves, and adapts poorly to bright lights. Interestingly, it's possible to find a Larvitar holding a half-eaten clump of earth while it sleeps, believed to be due to falling asleep after filling its belly.

Habits and Additions Across Generations

In Pokémon Sleep, it's mentioned that Larvitar can be found holding a half-eaten clump of earth while sleeping. The Pokémon's penchant for eating mountains, fences, or probably anything else may come from the legend of the Tarasque. Its name, Yogiras in Japanese, may be a combination of "yōji" (baby or child) or "yōsei" (larva) and "kirai" (hate), possibly referencing its birth deep underground away from its parents.
