Ditto is a unique Normal-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I. It is a light purple or pink blob-like creature with vestigial facial features, including beady eyes and a simple mouth often pulled into a smile. Ditto's most remarkable ability is its power to transform into an exact replica of any physical object or living creature it encounters. This transformation ability allows Ditto to adapt the form, abilities, and moves of its opponent in battle. However, Ditto cannot mimic the strength of another Pokémon, and its transformations may sometimes be imperfect, especially if based on memory.

Interestingly, Ditto cannot remain transformed while laughing and may have difficulty changing its face during transformation in some media depictions. In the wild, when two Ditto meet, they attempt to transform into each other. Ditto is known to transform into a rock when sleeping to avoid being attacked. Despite its remarkable abilities, Ditto is considered inherently weak, even after transforming.

Breeding

Ditto is genderless and can breed with any other breedable Pokémon, making it invaluable for Pokémon breeding. However, Ditto eggs can never be produced.

• Red/Blue: Capable of copying an opponent's genetic code to instantly transform itself into a duplicate of the enemy.
• Gold: It can freely recombine its own cellular structure to transform into other life-forms.
• Ruby/Sapphire: Ditto rearranges its cell structure to transform itself into other shapes. However, if it tries to transform itself into something by relying on its memory, this Pokémon manages to get details wrong.
• Sword: It can reconstitute its entire cellular structure to change into what it sees, but it returns to normal when it relaxes.

Ditto does not evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Habits and Additions Across Generations

Ditto is never far from civilization or people. In later generations, Ditto gained the hidden ability Imposter, which allows it to automatically transform into the opponent upon entering battle. In Pokémon Sleep, it was revealed that Ditto can sleep while still transformed into either a rock or another Pokémon.
