Wartortle is a Water-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I. It is the evolved form of Squirtle, evolving at level 16, and evolves into Blastoise at level 36. This bipedal, indigo reptilian Pokémon resembles a turtle with distinctive features such as brown eyes, a dark blue streak on each cheek, and two sharp teeth protruding from its upper jaw. Wartortle's most notable characteristics are its feather-like ears covered in pale blue fur and a thick, wavy tail with light blue fur that cannot be fully withdrawn into its shell.

Wartortle's shell is an important aspect of its biology and lore. The shell has a pale yellow underside and is separated into upper and lower halves by a thick, white rim. Older Wartortles may have scars and algae growing on their shells, with more scratches indicating the potential for evolving into a stronger Blastoise. The presence of algae on a Wartortle's shell is also considered a sign of great age, as this Pokémon is said to live up to 10,000 years.

In terms of abilities, Wartortle uses its furry ears and tail as both rudders and balancing rods to maintain balance while swimming at high speeds. It can store air in its fur for extended underwater diving and is known to hide in water when hunting, emerging to surprise its prey. Wartortle has been observed living in colonies on islands, though its preferred habitat seems to be freshwater ponds and lakes.

Evolutions

Squirtle (Level 16) → Wartortle (Level 36) → Blastoise

Habits

Wartortle is known to sleep with its body tucked into its shell while remaining wary of threats. It leaves its long, furry tail poking out a bit to feel out its surroundings in case of danger. When hunting, it often hides in water to stalk unwary prey, using its ears and tail for quick, balanced swimming.

Additions Across Generations

In Generation II, Wartortle and its evolutionary relatives were the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Skull Bash naturally. The hidden ability Rain Dish was introduced in later generations, allowing Wartortle to heal 1/16 of its HP after each turn while the weather is rainy.
