Vulpix is a small, fox-like Fire-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I. It is known for its distinctive six curled tails, which are actually born as a single white tail that splits as it grows. Vulpix has a red-brown pelt with a cream-colored underbelly, large pointed ears, and brown eyes. Inside its body burns a flame that never goes out, which it can manipulate to create floating wisps of fire. These flame wisps are sometimes mistaken for ghosts by humans.

Vulpix has the unique ability to feign injury to escape from powerful opponents. As it matures, its tails become more beautiful and luxurious. Vulpix can control its internal flame, expelling it from its mouth to prevent overheating when temperatures rise. In the wild, Vulpix can be found in grassy plains, often in small groups.

Red/Blue: At the time of birth, it has just one tail. The tail splits from its tip as it grows older.
Yellow: Both its fur and its tails are beautiful. As it grows, the tails split and form more tails.
Gold: As it develops, its single white tail gains color and splits into six. It is quite warm and cuddly.
Ruby/Sapphire: At the time of its birth, Vulpix has one white tail. The tail separates into six if this Pokémon receives plenty of love from its Trainer. The six tails become magnificently curled.

Evolutions

Vulpix evolves into Ninetales when exposed to a Fire Stone.

Habits

Vulpix is known to manipulate fire with great precision, using it to assist in catching prey. It often feigns injury to escape from opponents too powerful for it to defeat. Vulpix performs flame expulsion even while sleeping to regulate its body temperature.

Additions Across Generations

In Generation VII, an Alolan form of Vulpix was introduced. Alolan Vulpix is an Ice-type Pokémon that can expel breath as cold as −58 °F (−50 °C). It lives in small packs called skulks in snow-capped mountains and has adapted to colder climates. The Alolan form evolves into Alolan Ninetales when exposed to an Ice Stone.
