Donphan is a Ground-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II. It is known for its tough, armor-like hide and powerful rolling attacks. Donphan's body is primarily gray with a black band running down its back, resembling a car tire when it curls up. It has a pair of elongated ears and a long, flexible trunk that ends with two nostril-like openings. Donphan's most distinctive features are its sharp, white tusks, which are smaller in females.

This Pokémon is incredibly strong, capable of easily hauling a dump truck and knocking down houses with its tackles. Donphan's favorite attack involves curling its body into a ball and charging at foes while rolling at high speed. Once it starts rolling, it can be difficult for Donphan to stop. Despite its strength, Donphan is normally calm but can become enraged and start a rampage.

Interestingly, Donphan has two Paradox Pokémon counterparts: Great Tusk, said to be its ancient relative, and Iron Treads, considered its future relative. These Paradox Pokémon are exclusive to Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, respectively.

Evolution

Habits and Additions Across Generations

In its natural habitat, Donphan can often be seen within groups of Phanpy. The length and size of a Donphan's tusks indicate its rank within its herd, with longer and bigger tusks signifying a higher status. These tusks take a considerable amount of time to grow. Donphan uses its immense strength to help clear rock and mud slides that block mountain trails. In Generation VI, it was revealed that Donphan can Mega Evolve into Mega Donphan using the Donphanite, though this is exclusive to certain fan games and is not canon in the main series.
